People lump all of Anna Maria Island together, and honestly? That's a mistake. Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach might share a 7-mile barrier island, but they feel like different vacations. Holmes Beach is the bustling center strip — restaurants on every block, souvenir shops, the island's biggest public beach. Bradenton Beach is the quieter southern end where locals fish off the Historic Bridge Street Pier and the pace drops another notch.

I've had guests book Holmes Beach expecting peace and quiet, then switch to Bradenton Beach the next year. And the reverse. Picking the right town makes or breaks the trip. So here's the real breakdown — updated for 2026.

Where to Eat (This Decides It for Some People)

HOLMES BEACH WINS

🍽️ Restaurant Scene

Not even close on quantity. Holmes Beach has the island's Publix, the two biggest breakfast spots (Sun & Surf Cafe, plus The Donut Experiment that always has a line out the door), and Gulf Drive is basically a restaurant row. You can eat somewhere different every night for a week.

The standouts: Eat Here does creative coastal dishes that would cost double in Sarasota. Mr. Bones BBQ is the island's best-kept secret for smoked ribs. Duffy's Tavern is dive-bar perfection — cheap beer, good burgers, zero pretense.

Bradenton Beach has fewer options but they're solid. Bridge Street Bistro is probably the most romantic dinner on AMI — candlelit tables, excellent seafood. Blue Marlin does a great fish taco. And the Bridge Street Pier area has a strip of casual spots right on the water. It's enough if you're cooking most meals at your rental, but you'll feel the limits after 5-6 days.

Beach Access and Crowds

DEPENDS WHAT YOU WANT

🏖️ The Sand Situation

Holmes Beach has Manatee Public Beach — the island's biggest and most popular beach with a parking lot, lifeguards, restrooms, and a playground. It's the go-to for families, and it shows. Peak season weekends? You're setting up your chair early or you're in the back row.

Bradenton Beach has Coquina Beach at the very southern tip, which is a gorgeous, wider stretch that somehow stays less packed. There's a nice nature trail that loops through the dunes. The vibe is calmer. If you want to read a book in peace without someone's Bluetooth speaker three towels over, this is your spot.

Both beaches have the same Gulf water, same sugar sand. The difference is atmosphere. Holmes Beach = energy and convenience. Bradenton Beach = space and quiet.

Rental Prices — Real Numbers for 2026

3BR House (weekly)$3,200–$4,500$2,800–$3,800~12%
Waterfront with Pool (weekly)$4,500–$6,000$3,800–$5,200~15%
Peak Season Premium+40-50%+35-45%Lower spike in BB

That 10-20% gap adds up fast on a two-week stay. Bradenton Beach gives you more house for the money, especially on the bayside where you can find rentals with docks and canal access for what a basic Gulf-view condo costs in Holmes Beach.

One thing worth knowing: booking direct saves another 10-20% over Airbnb or VRBO on either side of the island. The platform fees are brutal on AMI-priced rentals.

The Nightlife Situation

HOLMES BEACH

🌅 After Dark

Let's be real — nobody picks AMI for the nightlife. But if you want a drink after dinner without driving to the mainland, Holmes Beach has more options. Skinnys Place is a legendary tiki bar that's been there forever. Duffy's has live music some nights. There are a handful of spots along Gulf Drive where you can grab a cocktail and watch the sunset without planning ahead.

Bradenton Beach nightlife is basically Bridge Street after dark. A couple of bars, sometimes live music, and then it's quiet. Which, for a lot of our guests, is exactly the point. If you wanted clubs and cocktail lounges, you'd be in Sarasota.

Getting Around Without Losing Your Mind

Parking on AMI is the island's worst feature. Full stop. Both towns struggle with it during season (January through April), but Holmes Beach gets hit harder because more people are coming to its restaurants and Manatee Public Beach.

The free AMI Island Trolley runs through both towns and it's honestly the move. It goes from the north end (Anna Maria city) all the way down to Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach. Runs every 20 minutes during the day. Your rental probably comes with a spot, so park the car and use the trolley.

Bradenton Beach has a slight edge for leaving the island — the Cortez Bridge connects you straight to Cortez Village (stellar seafood, working waterfront, less touristy) and the mainland. Holmes Beach connects via Manatee Avenue, which turns into a traffic nightmare during season.

Fishing — Bradenton Beach Takes This One

BRADENTON BEACH

🎣 Lines in the Water

The Historic Bridge Street Pier is one of the best free fishing spots on the Gulf Coast. Snook, redfish, sheepshead, mackerel — depending on the season, something's always biting. No license needed to fish from the pier.

Plus, Cortez Village is right across the bridge. It's a real working fishing village — not a tourist recreation of one. Charter boats, bait shops, the fishing culture is baked into the place. Some of our guests in Dockside Dreams launch their kayaks right from the dock and fish the flats at sunrise.

Holmes Beach has solid wade fishing along the Gulf side and some charter operations, but Bradenton Beach's proximity to Cortez and the pier give it the clear win for anglers.

For Families — It's Actually a Tie

Holmes Beach is better if your kids need stimulation and variety. More ice cream shops, the playground at Manatee Public Beach, more restaurants with kids' menus, a broader selection of things to do within walking distance.

Bradenton Beach is better if your kids are young and you want calm. Coquina Beach has calmer waters on the bayside for toddlers. The slower pace means less traffic, less noise, more of that "unplug and build sandcastles" energy. The nature trail at Coquina is a sneaky-good activity for kids who like exploring.

Honestly, with the trolley running between both towns, your family gets access to everything regardless of where you stay. It really comes down to whether you want your front door closer to the action (Holmes Beach) or closer to the quiet (Bradenton Beach).

🏆 The Verdict

There's no wrong answer here — just a better fit for your trip.

  • Pick Holmes Beach if: You want walkable restaurants, don't mind crowds, love convenience, and plan to eat out most nights. Best for first-timers to AMI and social travelers.
  • Pick Bradenton Beach if: You want a quieter base, better rental value, easy access to Cortez Village, and a more "local" feel. Best for repeat visitors, anglers, and families with young kids.
  • Pick Anna Maria (city) if: You want the most secluded beaches on the island — Bean Point at the north tip is spectacular. Fewest restaurants but the most peaceful setting.

Or do what a lot of our returning guests do: try one town this year, the other next year. The island's only 7 miles long — you'll love both sides.
