Bradenton vs Sarasota Beaches: The Real Comparison
We live here. We send guests to these beaches every week. Here's what we actually tell people when they ask which side of the bay has better sand.

The Sand Situation (It Actually Matters)
Siesta Key's sand is in a league of its own. That's not hype. It's 99% quartz crystal, which means two things: it stays cool on your feet when the air temp hits 95, and it doesn't stick to everything you own. You can literally brush it off your legs and walk to your car clean. If sand quality is your deciding factor, Siesta Key wins and it's not close.
Anna Maria Island's sand is beautiful too, but different. Softer white sand mixed with shell fragments, especially at Coquina Beach. After a good storm, the shell line at Coquina is incredible for finding whelks and sand dollars. The sand at Bean Point is finer and cleaner than the rest of AMI — probably because fewer people make the walk out there.
Venice Beach? Totally different vibe. The sand is darker, mixed with fossilized shell and bone. Not a "white sand paradise" postcard — but it's the shark tooth capital of the world, and kids go absolutely nuts sifting through it.
Parking: The Thing Nobody Tells You
This is where Bradenton beaches destroy the Sarasota side. Seriously.
Coquina Beach has a huge free parking lot on both sides of Gulf Drive. Even on a Saturday in March, we've never seen it completely full. Manatee Public Beach has another free lot with 200+ spaces plus overflow. And the free AMI trolley runs every 20 minutes, so you can park at Coquina and hop to Holmes Beach or Bradenton Beach without moving your car.
Siesta Key? The main public beach lot holds maybe 800 cars. Sounds like a lot until you realize 25,000 people visit on a peak weekend day. During January through April, that lot fills by 9:30-10am. The overflow lot on Midnight Pass fills next. After that, you're circling residential streets hoping someone leaves. We've had guests come back and say they spent 45 minutes looking for a spot.
Lido Beach charges $5/hour at the main lot (they bumped it up in 2025). There's a free lot at the south end of Lido Key, but it's a 15-minute walk to the good beach.
Longboat Key barely has any public access points. Beer Can Island at the north end has a small dirt lot that fits maybe 30 cars.
Water Clarity and Conditions
The Gulf of Mexico is not the Caribbean — let's set that expectation. But on a calm day between April and October, the water from Anna Maria down to Siesta Key can look genuinely turquoise. It's beautiful.
A few differences worth knowing:
- Coquina Beach and Bean Point — typically the calmest water in the area. The southern tip of AMI is protected by Longboat Key, so waves are minimal. Great for toddlers and nervous swimmers.
- Holmes Beach — slightly more surf action. Nothing dangerous, but enough for boogie boarding on windy days.
- Siesta Key — moderate waves, especially near the jetty at the north end. The water clarity is excellent when there hasn't been rain. After a thunderstorm, it takes 24-48 hours to clear up.
- Lido Beach — can have stronger currents than other area beaches. The channel between Lido Key and Longboat Key pulls water through. Not ideal for weak swimmers.
- Venice Beach — gets murky faster after rain because of the Myakka River outflow nearby. Best water clarity is during dry stretches in spring.
Red tide is the wildcard. It hits both sides equally — there's no "safe side." Check the Mote Marine red tide status page before heading to any beach between August and November.
Where to Go for Quiet (The Real Secret Spots)
Siesta Key gets all the press, but Coquina Beach is where we send our guests who want quiet. The south end, past the pavilion, barely gets foot traffic even in February. You can set up chairs with 50 feet of open sand in every direction.
Bean Point is the real winner though. Park on North Shore Drive in Anna Maria City (free street parking, usually available), walk north past the last house, and you'll hit a stretch of sand that feels like your own private beach. The catch: there's no shade, no facilities, and no lifeguard. Bring everything you need.
On the Sarasota side, north Longboat Key — what locals call Beer Can Island — is surprisingly empty on weekdays. It's technically a sandbar at the very tip of the key. Shallow water, good shelling, and almost no one there on a Tuesday morning.
One more: the south end of Lido Key past South Lido Park. Walk through the mangrove trail and you'll find a small beach facing Sarasota Bay. Calm water, zero crowds, and dolphins cruise through the channel regularly.
Sunset Spots (Ranked)
Every Gulf beach faces west, so technically every beach has sunsets. But some are better than others.
- Bean Point, Anna Maria Island — our #1 pick. Unobstructed 180-degree view. The sun drops straight into the water. No buildings, no condos in the way. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset.
- Coquina Beach south jetty — sit on the rocks at the very southern tip of AMI. You'll see the sun set with Longboat Key's silhouette in the background.
- Siesta Key drum circle — every Sunday evening near the main pavilion. It's a whole scene — drummers, dancers, fire spinners as the sun goes down. Touristy? Sure. But it's genuinely fun once.
- Lido Beach — the St. Armands dinner-then-sunset combo is hard to beat. Eat at Shore, walk to the beach, watch the colors.
- Beer Can Island, Longboat Key — almost nobody here at sunset. You'll share it with maybe 10 other people. Bring a cooler.
Shelling and Shark Teeth
Two totally different treasure hunts.
For shells: Coquina Beach after a strong west wind or cold front. The shell line piles up on the south end. We've found perfect lightning whelks, alphabet cones, and sand dollars all in one morning. Holmes Beach is decent too, but Coquina consistently produces more variety. On the Sarasota side, the north tip of Longboat Key is excellent for finding olives and fighting conchs.
For shark teeth: Venice Beach, no contest. It's about 45 minutes south of Bradenton. Low tide is prime time. The teeth wash up in the dark shell hash along the waterline. Grab a Florida snow shovel at one of the shops on Venice Avenue (about $15) — it's a sifting basket on a handle. Kids can fill a bag in an hour. The teeth are mostly from prehistoric sharks, some millions of years old. Free souvenirs that beat anything in a gift shop.

Beach Questions We Get Every Week
Which has better sand — Bradenton or Sarasota beaches?
Siesta Key (Sarasota side) has the finest sand — 99% quartz crystal that stays cool underfoot even in summer. Anna Maria Island beaches have soft white sand but with more shell fragments, which is actually a plus if you're into shelling. Both are beautiful, but Siesta Key's sand texture is genuinely unique.
Where is the easiest beach parking near Bradenton?
Coquina Beach at the south end of Anna Maria Island has a large free parking lot that rarely fills completely, even in peak season. Manatee Public Beach also has a sizable free lot. The free AMI trolley lets you park once and beach-hop all day without moving your car.
Is Anna Maria Island or Siesta Key better for families?
Anna Maria Island is better for families with young kids. Coquina Beach and Manatee Public Beach have calm, shallow water, lifeguards on duty, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and restrooms. The free trolley keeps kids entertained between beach stops. Siesta Key is beautiful but more crowded, with stronger currents on some stretches. We break this down further in our Bradenton vs Sarasota for families guide.
Can I find shark teeth at Venice Beach from Bradenton?
Yes — Venice Beach is about 45 minutes south of Bradenton and roughly 30 minutes south of Sarasota. It's the shark tooth capital of the world. Bring a sand flea rake or a Florida snow shovel (sold at shops on Venice Avenue for about $15) and sift through the shell line at low tide.
What is the least crowded beach near Bradenton and Sarasota?
Bean Point at the northern tip of Anna Maria Island is consistently the least crowded beach in the area — you have to walk about 10 minutes from the nearest parking on North Shore Drive, which filters out casual visitors. On the Sarasota side, the north end of Longboat Key (Beer Can Island) stays relatively quiet on weekdays.
